Porous 316L Stainless Steel
Porous 316L Stainless Steel is available in Micron Grades from 0.1 to 100. Typically porous Stainless Steel is slightly more costly than porous Bronze, but 316LSS offers significantly improved mechanical properties, temperature resistance and corrosion resistance. Stainless Steel also offers close dimensional control since the products are often manufactured using precision dies.
When compared to porous bronze, porous 316L SS products are normally specified when higher strength, more corrosion resistance, higher temperature service or finer pore sizes are required. 316L SS is normally selected since the “L” Grade signifies extra low carbon, which increases the corrosion resistance in many environments.
The 316L SS powders that are produced by water atomization, have rounded, irregular shaped particles that are compacted prior to sintering in order to interlock the particles. This particle interlocking forms a part with sufficient green strength for handling. As the powder size decreases, the particle shape becomes more rounded and higher compaction forces are required to produce components with adequate green strength.
