Flame Arrestors

Sintered Metal Flame Arrestors are used in many process instrument and analytical instrument applications as safety devices for handling combustible gases for gas analyzers. By preventing the gas from burning back into the device and exploding, damage to the equipment or injury to an operator can be avoided.

The high thermal conductivity of the porous sintered metal flame arrestor cools the flame front or combustion wave by absorbing and dissipating the heat of the flame. Applications for sintered metal flame arrestors include explosion proof enclosure venting, flashback prevention for welding torches, and ignition prevention in flue gas stacks. The worldwide acceptance of guidelines for sintered metal flame arrestors, such as outlined in the ATEX Directive, has helped to standardize the requirements for assuring a high quality reproducible product. Chand Eisenmann Metallurgical manufactures flame arrestors to the following specifications in order to comply with the ATEX Directive and the associated International Standards Organization (ISO) testing guidelines.

ISO 4003 Æ Determination of Bubble Point Pore Size in Porous Sintered Metal
ISO 4022 Æ Determination of Permeability
ISO 2738 Æ Determination of Density in Porous Materials

A sampling plan per ATEX Directive BS EN ISO/IEC 17050-1:2004 is also needed to monitor the overall manufacturing process and to check the flame arrestor quality in order to fully comply with the ATEX Directive.

Flame arrestor designers will need to specify other properties such as the mechanical strength, flow conditions and quenching rate requirements that are specific to each application. Detailed technical information about the porous sintered metal material is required by many testing agencies such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and Factory Mutual (FM). Chand Eisenmann Metallurgical has developed density, pore size and permeability data for our standard grades of porous sintered metal flame arrestors. Flame Arrestor samples can also be provided to develop the engineering data required for approval by an independent test agency.
